Why a Caesarean may be recommended
Reasons vary and can relate to previous surgery, placental position, fetal presentation, maternal health, fetal wellbeing or progress in labour.
Preparing for a planned Caesarean
Follow the hospital and practice instructions regarding admission, fasting, medication, pre-authorisation and arrival time. Ask what to expect on the day.
Recovery
Recovery includes wound care, pain management, mobility, bleeding and feeding support. Activity should increase gradually according to your discharge advice.
Future pregnancies
A previous Caesarean does not automatically determine every future birth plan. Future pregnancy and delivery options should be discussed individually.
Seek urgent care after birth or surgery for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, a painful/swollen leg, fainting or other severe/worsening symptoms.
