Types of contraception
Options can include barrier methods, oral contraception, injections, implants, intrauterine devices and permanent contraception. Each has benefits, limitations and possible side effects.
Choosing an option
Your clinician will consider medical history, blood pressure, smoking, migraine history, medication, menstrual symptoms and pregnancy plans before recommending an option.
Long-acting contraception
Implants and intrauterine devices can provide long-term contraception without daily dosing. Suitability and insertion should be discussed individually.
When to review contraception
Review is useful if side effects are troublesome, bleeding changes significantly, your health changes, or you want to plan a pregnancy or switch methods.
