Uterine polyps

Uterine or endometrial polyps are growths arising from the lining of the uterus. They are usually benign but can cause abnormal bleeding and sometimes require investigation or removal. Specialist assessment is available through Dr Tini’s practice in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

Possible symptoms

Polyps can be associated with bleeding between periods, heavy or irregular periods, bleeding after menopause or fertility concerns. Some are found incidentally.

How polyps are assessed

Ultrasound may suggest a polyp. Saline ultrasound or hysteroscopy may be considered when a clearer view of the uterine cavity is needed.

Treatment

Small asymptomatic polyps may sometimes be monitored. Hysteroscopic removal can be considered when symptoms, size, age or other factors make treatment appropriate.

Laboratory examination

Removed tissue is generally sent for laboratory assessment. Your clinician will explain the result and whether follow-up is needed.
