WOMEN’S WELLNESS & SCREENING

Cervical screening and Pap smears

Cervical screening is designed to identify HPV-related changes or abnormal cervical cells before they become more serious. Your screening interval depends on age, history and current guidance. This service is available through Dr Tini’s practice in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

What screening is for

A Pap test examines cervical cells, while HPV testing looks for high-risk HPV types. The appropriate test and interval depend on your circumstances and previous results.

What to expect

A speculum examination allows a sample to be taken from the cervix. The procedure is usually brief. Tell the practice if you are pregnant, bleeding, or have had previous abnormal results or cervical treatment.

Understanding results

Most screening results are normal. If a result is abnormal, follow-up may involve repeat testing, HPV testing, colposcopy or biopsy depending on the finding.

Preparing for screening

If possible, follow any instructions provided by the practice before your appointment. Bring previous results if your earlier screening was done elsewhere.
