Physical recovery
Recovery varies after vaginal and Caesarean birth. Bleeding, discomfort and fatigue are common, but symptoms should gradually improve. Follow wound or perineal care instructions.
Follow-up
Postnatal review allows discussion of recovery, bleeding, contraception, feeding, blood pressure or other pregnancy-related conditions, and any new concerns.
Emotional wellbeing
Mood changes can occur after birth. Persistent low mood, severe anxiety, inability to cope, frightening thoughts or concerns about safety deserve prompt professional support.
Contraception after birth
Fertility can return before periods resume. Discuss suitable contraception if you wish to avoid or delay another pregnancy.
Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe headache or visual changes, seizures, fever with severe illness, a painful/swollen leg, or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby.
