PROCEDURES & SURGERY

Ovarian cyst removal

Surgery to remove an ovarian cyst may be considered when a cyst is persistent, large, symptomatic, has concerning features or causes complications. Consultation and procedure planning are coordinated through Dr Tini’s practice in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

When surgery may be considered

The decision depends on symptoms, age, ultrasound appearance, cyst size, persistence, pregnancy status and individual risk.

Surgical approach

Many cysts can be managed laparoscopically, while some require an open procedure. Where appropriate, the aim may be to remove the cyst while preserving healthy ovarian tissue.

Laboratory testing

Removed tissue may be sent for histology. Your follow-up will include discussion of the result and any further care.

Recovery

Recovery depends on the surgical approach and extent of treatment. Follow your personalised hospital discharge instructions.
